Our Specialties
Cobalt
Cobalt is necessary in key emerging technologies, including lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, superalloys in jet engines, and permanent magnets in advanced electronics.
Globally, the largest end-uses for cobalt are batteries, industrial metals and chemicals, and superalloys. Cobalt may only comprise a small portion of a product, but it is an indispensable, performance-enhancing element given its heat tolerance, corrosion resistance, and magnetic strength.
Cobalt demand is projected to grow, but the supply chain face risks, such as the concentration of mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the concentration of refining in China.
Nickel
Nickel is necessary in key emerging technologies such as superalloys in jet engines, cemented carbides in cutting tools, and batteries in electric vehicles. Other nickel end-uses include stainless steel and alloyed steel, as well as household appliances, medical equipment, and heavy machinery.
Given its heat tolerance, high ductility and tensile strength, and corrosion and oxidation resistance, nickel demand is expected to soar.
However, nickel mining is concentrated in Indonesia, where Chinese companies control much of the mining and refining production. This nickel is then further refined in China, which also dominates nickel refining.
